With many third level students relying on grant support to complete their education, news of increased thresholds will be very welcome.

Grant applications for the coming year are now open, and there have been a number of significant changes to income limits.

Students from households earning between €62,000 and €100,000 can now for the first time apply for a new €500 grant towards their student contribution fee.

And the income threshold for the 50% student contribution grant has increased from €55,240 to €62,000.

In addition to these changes, the amount a student can now earn outside term time has increased from €4,500 to €6,552.

Students are advised to apply early at www.susi.ie as a high number of applications are expected over the coming months.

Eleanor Murphy, SUSI’s Communications and Customer Service Manager said: “SUSI is now accepting applications for student funding for the academic year 2023/24.

“A number of changes have been made to the student grant scheme so if you’re planning on attending further or higher education in the next academic year, logon to www.susi.ie and check out our Eligibility Indicator. This is a quick and easy way to see if you might be eligible for funding.

“Be sure to submit your application before the priority processing dates to receive priority assessment. And don’t forget, if you received funding in academic year 2022/23 and are progressing to the next year of your course, you must submit a renewal application.”

SUSI opened for renewal applications on March 9 and to date, has received over 11,000 renewal applications. SUSI aims to have a decision with as many applicants as possible before the start of the new academic year and applications received on or before the priority processing dates will receive priority assessment.

The priority processing dates are June 8 for renewal applications and July 6 for new applications.

Students do not need to have their Leaving Cert results or to have accepted a course to apply. They can simply supply the details of the course they hope to study and update their course choice online at a later date.

SUSI received over 87,000 applications in academic year 2022/23 with over 66,000 students awarded funding.

For more information on making an application, students can check out www.susi.ie

They can also contact SUSI’s dedicated Support Desk by phone, email or on Twitter and Facebook.
