A Donegal man is set to stand trial for 16 counts of rape.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was before Letterkenny District Court this week.

Aged in his 50s and from the east of the county, the man will now go before the Central Criminal Court.

The man, who did not speak during the brief hearing, faces 16 charges of alleged rape and a further three charges of sexual assault.

Garda Gillian Page gave evidence of serving a book of evidence on the accused at 10.40am at Letterkenny courthouse on Monday.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented for the accused to be forwarded to the Central Criminal Court on all 19 indictments.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham administered the alibi warning and made a section 56 order relating to tapes of interviews with the defendant.

Judge Cunningham returned the man for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Legal aid was granted to solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian and two legal counsel were assigned.
