Minister for Defence to review troops at Finner Camp for Syria deployment

Next month, 130 Irish soldiers, including 28 from Donegal, will be deployed to Syria with the 67th Infantry Group

Irish soldiers from the 67th Infantry Group who will be deployed to Syria next month will undergo a Ministerial Review on Monday at Finner Camp.

A total of 130 soldiers, including 28 from Donegal, will travel on the mission.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin, will review the men and women of the group prior to their departure for a six-month deployment.

The Minister will be accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, in Donegal on Monday.

The deployment is a part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The Infantry Group will be carrying out peacekeeping duties under Chapter 6 of the UN Charter.

Soldiers will be based at Camp Faouar and the group contains personnel of all ranks, including 14 Officers, 115 Enlisted Personnel and 1 Chaplain. A total of 38 personnel are on their first tour of duty overseas.

The group has a wide range of capabilities including armoured force protection, patrolling and mobility, surveillance, communications, medical and operational expertise.

Monday's ceremony will include a parade of the 67th Infantry Group, the blessing of the Unit Identification Flag and an address by the Minister for Defence.
