Hopes that  Northern Lights will be visible again on Monday night

Clear views of the Northern Lights were visible around Inishowen on Sunday night

Another opportunity to see the Northern Lights in Inishowen is expected on Monday night after a spectacular display on Sunday.

Astronomy Ireland is urging all to watch the night sky for the aurora borealis, the scientific name for the light display,  saying  “another good display is expected after sunset”.

Cloudy skies on Monday night could hinder the chances of seeing another display but the Donegal Weather Channel said that while there will be a bit more cloud around there are “some clear spells in the mix also”.

“It is also looking highly likely we will have another massive show again tonight.”

The display of the Northern Lights was the biggest in Ireland since March 2016 and was visible from many places in Inishowen, including Buncrana, Culdaff and Malin Head.

The light displays occur due to collisions between gas particles in the Earth’s atmosphere and charged particles ejected from the Sun’s atmosphere

Ali Farren, manager of the Malin Head Community Centre, said the area was busy with people trying to catch a view of the phenomenon with the clear night producing spectacular sights.

“We had a great show altogether and it was very visible to the naked eye.  It was obviously up and on social media and the cars just kept coming and coming.

“We are blessed because of where we live, we have a good chance of seeing them here and last night was certainly gorgeous.”
