Tributes have been paid in Donegal to Ken Block, the motorsport icon who has died.

The American, who competed in the 2019 Donegal International Rally, died following a snowmobile accident in Utah.

The 55-year-old's death was confirmed by Hoonicorn Racing, who said in a statement on Instagram: “It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today.

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

Block was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when the snowmobile upended, landing on top of him, the Sheriff's Office said.

Block gained a massive following and was particularly famous for a Gymkhana series, which saw him drive high-powered cars around inner-city challenges.

In 2019, Block took on the Donegal International Rally in a 1994 Escort Cosworth. His bid ended on SS2, Grianan, after he and Alex Gelsomino, his navigator, crashed out.

The 2019 event was subsequently cut short following the tragic death of Manus Kelly while competing ion SS15, Fanad.

The Donegal Motor Club paid tribute to Block, noting his famous number 43.

DMC said: “RIP #43. Such sad news morning. A great ambassador for our sport.

From everyone in Donegal thanks for the memories Ken.”
