As Christmas approaches there’ll be plenty of food and packaging waste in many a house-hold in Donegal.
For anyone thinking about embracing composting but perhaps needing to be nudged or inspired in the right direction, join ChangeMakers Donegal at the Exchange Inishowen tomorrow night (Tuesday, December 6) from 6pm to 8pm.
Why is this important? From the soil grows materials we need for our homes, clothes, and food.
Returning these nutrients replenishes the soil, starting the cycle anew. It’s important to think about how we can support this cycle, and nourish the soil as well as ourselves.
This ChangeMakers Donegal workshop marks the start of a journey of empowering people to reduce waste and engage with the nutrient cycle, either individually or collectively.
It will explore some ways to make the most of your food scraps in the kitchen, as well as ways that food scraps and other household material can be used for compost.
Attendees will be invited to reflect on their own circumstances and how it impacts their ability to reduce waste and recycle organic material.
The voice and needs of those who come will shape the focus of following workshops planned by ChangeMakers Donegal to support local people to make changes that make for a more just and sustainable world.
There will also be the option of taking home a brown bin starter pack provided by Donegal County Council to support and encourage this initiative.
Christmas is the season of great consumption and waste - an ideal time to learn about ways to save food and capture nutrients.
Doing so can have far-reaching positive impacts; getting informed and proactive around nutrient recycling can be your gift to the world.
ChangeMakers is an Inishowen Development Partnership Initiative which is also partnered with Donegal ETB, Self Help Africa, Trócaire and Concern and funded by Irish Aid.
Its overall goal is to link the experience of people in Donegal to that of people around the world by tackling global issues such as sustainability, climate change, human rights, Fairtrade, food waste and more on a local level within Donegal.
