Hackers have stolen 'tens of thousands' of euros from Carndonagh Traders Association
Tens of thousands of euros have been stolen by online hackers from an Inishowen non-profit organisation.
Carndonagh Traders Association lost a substantial amount while trying to pay an invoice for the recent Halloween Carnival in the town.
Davin Doherty of the Carndonagh Traders Association explained.
“We (Carndonagh Traders Association) are out tens of thousands of euros,” Mr Doherty explained. “We were in the middle of paying the invoice for the Halloween Carnival and then these hackers managed to intercept the payment so we have lost a major amount of money and the vendor hasn't been paid either.
“The vendor for the carnival is someone that we have been dealing with for years and for this to happen is devastating.
“We're a not-for-profit organisation and it's really set us back.”
Mr Doherty also revealed that two other businesses in Carndonagh have recently been targeted by hackers, one of which losing over €35,000.
“This is a massive problem that businesses are facing now.
“We know of businesses that have recently been targeted. One lost up to €35,000 while the other was one click away from losing a million.
“It's scary to think these guys are sitting waiting and able to steal these kinds of money. It's that bad that Buncrana garda station has a dedication unit to tackle this type of crime now,” he said.
Mr Doherty is urging local businesses to increase their online security.
“We as a traders association would urge businesses of all kinds to increase their online security.
"Make sure you double and triple-check everything before you send any payments, especially if you're dealing with a new supplier.
"Be on the lookout for new scams that are doing the rounds also, because if this can happen to us it can happen to anyone.”
Mr Doherty added that the highly successful gift card scheme has been unaffected by the hacking.
Gift cards remain untouched and have been selling well.
“The gift cards are 100%, so people don't have to worry about them. They remain unaffected and are still available. They have been selling phenomenally well.”
Gardai in Buncrana are currently investigating the incident.
