The Inishowen Choir of Ages, a multi-generational choir composed of singers aged from five to the over-80s, is in rehearsals for a performance in Buncrana next month.
The 10-week intergenerational singing project is working to a performance at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel on April 6 which includes an eight-piece band.
The choir, under the guidance of Buncrana musician Bernie Doherty, practises every Wednesday at 7.30pm at The Exchange in Buncrana.
More than 60 singers, including 20 children, will be taking part in the performance.
“The craic is mighty, but moreover, the sound is really becoming spectacular, with solos, harmonies and a beautiful collection of songs,” Bernie, who runs the Music Box community music school, said.
The project began in 2020 and had completed seven weeks of rehearsals when it had to stop due to Covid-19.
“We began this pre-Covid but had to quit before our big show. We were always determined to finish what we had started but I wanted to give it plenty of time before we started to make sure that all the age groups were comfortable with coming together again. It has been a truly uplifting experience, so beneficial and lovely to see all ages sharing a love of music.”
The choir involves generations from the same families.
“We have families who come together to sing. There are mothers and daughters, mothers and sons and we have a grandmother who comes with her granddaughter. The band is aged from 14 to almost 80 and they are all working really hard.
“It is absolutely the most beautiful thing I have ever done. It just feels like a treat every time. There is a real bond between the whole group and everyone understands that it is a collaboration - exchanging ideas and working together. It’s definitely a group effort and it’s fantastic.”
Tickets for the event are available at Ticketsource.eu and at The Exchange in Buncrana on Wednesdays between 4pm and 9pm and Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm. The cost is €10 for adults and €5 for children.
