Malin GAA pay tribute to the life of Danny McColgan

Malin honour the life of club stalwart Danny McColgan

The Malin GAA community was met with profound sadness on Friday morning upon hearing of the passing of club stalwart and lifelong friend, Danny McColgan.

A familiar and much-loved figure, McColgan dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the club from its reformation in the mid-1980s, becoming an invaluable asset whose contributions will never be forgotten.

McColgan was the ultimate club volunteer, a man who gave his time selflessly, never seeking recognition or reward. He was always at the heart of every task, large or small, preferring to work behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight. His hard work and dedication played a crucial role in shaping Malin GAA into what it is today.

One of McColgan’s most significant legacies is the fine clubhouse that now stands proudly in Connolly Park. From plumbing to tiling the changing rooms in the mid-1990s, his craftsmanship and commitment were second to none. Every corner of the club bears his influence, a testament to the passion and effort he poured into its development.

Beyond his work on the facilities, he played a pivotal role in many aspects of club life. A dedicated fundraiser over the years, he was also a respected club umpire, known for his fairness and integrity. He was a regular presence at the match-day gate, collecting money and ensuring everything ran smoothly, and was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

His unwavering commitment was recognised in 1998 when he was deservedly named Clubperson of the Year. Nearly two decades later, in 2017, he was further honoured with induction into the Malin GAA Hall of Fame — an accolade he wore with immense pride.

The McColgan family name is deeply intertwined with the history of Malin GAA, and McColgan’s passion for the club has been carried on by his children and relatives, many of whom hold various roles both on and off the field.

Although his devotion to Malin GAA was unwavering, his love for Donegal football ran a close second. A loyal supporter of the county team, he was a fixture at Donegal matches for many years and was immensely proud to witness their victories in Croke Park. His dedication extended beyond just cheering from the stands; he also volunteered as a match-day steward at McCumhaill Park for numerous important games.

A true gentleman, a dedicated volunteer, and an irreplaceable part of Malin GAA, McColgan’s legacy will live on.
