All seven FRC rule proposals get the green light at Special Congress

Football Review Committee chairperson Jim Gavin addresses delegates during the GAA Special Congress 2024 at Croke Park in Dublin

Special Congress has given the thumbs up to all seven new football rules changes, which will now come into effect at both inter-county and club level in 2025.

The rules needed a 60% majority but Jim Gavin’s Football Review Committee’s proposals, of which Donegal’s Michael Murphy was a part of, received a landslide endorsement of 93% at Croke Park at the weekend.

Donegal open their NFL Division 1 campaign away to Kerry on January 26 and it’s going to be very interesting to see what Jim McGuinness makes of the seismic changes.

The seven rules were trialled at the inter-provincial series at Croke Park in October, following which proposals for four-point goals and two-point 45s were abandoned.

And the changes that got rubber-stamped on Jones Road are: (1) One v One at throw-in; (2) Advanced Mark alteration; (3) Goalkeeper restriction; (4) Solo and Go; (5) Three v Three structure; (6) Kick-out; (7) 40 metre Arc worth two points.

It should be noted that Central Council retain the option to alter the rules throughout the season.

There was also a vote taken on Saturday on whether or not the rules would be introduced at club level, and that received a 90% approval.

Central council delegate Sean Dunnion had told DonegalLive early last week that it was Donegal’s intention to back the changes after they were positively received at county committee earlier in the month.
