Liam McKinney adds even more silverware to the cabinet with Burt

Burt had too much for St Eunan's on Friday night

These are truly wonderful days in the life of Liam Óg McKinney.

It began last June when he was a key member of the Donegal senior hurling team who regained the Nickey Rackard Cup after a great comeback against Mayo in Croke Park.

It got even better when he was named ‘player of the match’ in his club Burt’s 14-man win over Setanta in the Donegal Club SHC final.

He was also named on the Nickey Rackard All-Star selection but his greatest accolade was when he was chosen as the Nickey Rackard Player of the Year.

And on Friday night he hit 0-10 in another ‘player of the match’ display as he helped Burt to their third U-21 county title on the trot, defeating St Eunan's 0-18 to 2-9 in Convoy.

But the ever-modest McKinney made sure he paid tribute to his colleagues and a gallant St Eunan’s side who made Burt fight all the way for their crown.

“It was a great game of hurling and we thought we might play a bit more hurling in the first half than we did.

“But fair play to Eunan’s as they were putting us under pressure for the whole game. We tried to play it through the lines but they just kept closing us down.”

But a lucky early goal put Burt on the back foot but McKinney and his teammates simply don’t do panic.

“Yes, that forced us to fight back and we got it level by half time and it just shows you the great character that is in this team.

“It is a privilege to play along with these boys and we have been together for a long time.

“This is our third county title in a row and we were up against it this year and that is a great St Eunan’s.

“It was a great game to play in with loads of hits and we are just so delighted to come out on the right side.

“But Eunan’s hit us with a great goal early in the second half and we had to battle back from that as well, but we hung in there and got home.”

Asked about his accolades he said he knew he was getting a Nickey Rackard All-Star but the individual award was a pleasant surprise.

“It was unbelievable and it is a great honour but and it has also been a great year for all the Burt boys.”
