Markievicz and Burt to meet in Donegal senior camogie final

Markievicz are chasing a third Donegal SCC title in four seasons on Saturday night when they face  Burt in the final at the Donegal GAA Training Centre in Convoy. (Throw-in, 7pm).

Markievicz were denied going three on the bounce in last year’s final by outsiders Carndonagh.

But the girls from the Finn Valley are back once more in the final and determined to make up for 2023’s disappointment.

James Callaghan is once again manager and he is hoping the hurt of last year and a campaign playing in the Tyrone camogie league will drive his team to victory.

Burt will look to upset the odds on Saturday

“The Tyrone league is a much higher standard and though we only won one game we believe competing at the higher level will raise our standard,” said Callaghan.

“Between the Donegal and Tyrone leagues, we have played 12 games so the girls have prepared well.

“We also beat Carndonagh last Saturday night in the semi-final, though we did come out of that game with a number of knocks and injuries.

“It will probably be Saturday morning before we will know for sure who we have and who is not fit the play.

“Ideally, we could have done with another week to ten days before we played again so as to get everybody back from injury.

“I don’t know what the rush is playing the game this weekend. The fixtures are like buses you can be hanging about waiting for one and then two come along together.”

Peter McGonagle is the Burt manager and he is in his second season wearing the manager’s bid.

And after defeat to Carndonagh in last year’s semi-final, McGonagle has now guided his side to this year’s decider. Burt defeated St Eunan’s in the other semi-final last weekend.

“We have a very young team and apart from Hannah McDermott, Caithlin McCann, Courtney Clare and Avril Craig, who are all in their 20s, the rest of the squad are in the 18 and 19 year old bracket and drawn from our last two minor teams”.

Burt are also the current minor champions,  defeating Markievicz in that final back in May.

“The girls are looking forward to the final and they are going to Convoy on Saturday to compete and hopefully come out on the right side of the result.”
