Buncrana manager Gary Duffy is happy his side is still in the promotion hunt following his team’s four-point win over Dungloe, in the Scarvey on Friday night.

“It is a good result for us,” says the Buncrana boss following the 0-15 to 0-11 win over the men from Rosses Park,” Duffy said.

“It means we are still in the hunt for the third-place play-off position with three games still to play.

“But there is still a lot of football to be played in the league. We have three games - Naomh Padraig Muff, Red Hughs, and Na Rosssa still to play. If we win those games, we should be in a good enough position, though it is not entirely in our own hands either.”

After the weekend's round of games, Buncrana is in third place in the league table and the automatic promotion play-off spot. But Milford and Termon are also in the running for that third spot too.

Milford are in fourth place level on points with Buncrana (15) but have one more game played. Termon are in fifth position with 10 games played, the same as Buncrana, but are a point behind the Inishowen men.

And Killybegs,  so long league leaders, after two defeats in recent weeks, including losing to Buncrana, could also find themselves dragged back into the promotion dogfight.

The Fishermen are in second place on 17 points but only have two games remaining including a match against league leaders, and the form team Four Masters.

“Just like the Killybegs game, that out there tonight was a good hard game against a seasoned senior championship team,” Duffy said.

“It is the kind of game that will bring our young players on and we are very happy how we stood up to a physically strong Dungloe side.

“We played well in the first half and led by three points at half-time, and what is particularly pleasing is the way we responded when they came back to a point in the second half.

“It is a valuable two points, but as I said there is still a lot of football to be played before the end of the league. We are happy to be still in with a chance of promotion.”
