Jamie Boyle leads out his New York side in Laois
Despite bringing Laois to the brink, Jamie Boyle and his New York side have been eliminated from the Tailteann Cup following their 1-13 to 1-9 defeat in O’Moore Park.
The Exiles were captained by Jamie Boyle, whose grandfather Michael is from Barnesmore, while his grandmother Peg Meehan is from outside Drimarone, with the man with Donegal blood togging out at corner-back for the afternoon.
Mark Timmons delivered a stunning goal at the 58-minute mark, breaking the deadlock and ultimately sealing the game for Laois. Prior to this decisive moment, New York had a golden opportunity to score, but Jack Reilly's shot narrowly missed the target.
Earlier in the match, Laois was down to 14 players when Shaun Fitzpatrick received his second yellow card at 49 minutes. Killian Butler promptly equalised, raising the possibility of an upset.
Despite the scare, Laois managed to stave off New York's goal attempt and capitalised on their own chance to advance to the next round.
The game began with New York trailing 4-1, with Paul Kingston contributing two frees and Evan O'Carroll and Mark Barry adding points for Laois. New York equalised in the 11th minute when Jack Reilly set up Bobby O'Regan, who scored a top-corner goal.
As the half progressed, New York's confidence grew. Killian Butler proved challenging to handle and scored two frees. Killian Roche secured a significant free for Laois, but a risky cross-field pass by Roche was intercepted, almost leading to a second New York goal. By half-time, New York led 1-6 to 0-8.
Laois started the second half with two quick points but struggled to maintain their rhythm. Fitzpatrick's sending off brought New York within reach of a historic victory.
But in the end, Laois managed to edge out New York and secure a place in the last eight.
