Donegal U-14 manager Aidan McAteer says the future is bright for the county despite his side falling to Offaly in the U-14 All-Ireland final in Carrigallen on a 4-5 to 2-6 scoreline.

Only a point separated the teams at the break, but Offaly hit a purple patch in the final 10 minutes of the game to cruise to a deserving five-point victory.

"Look we knew Offaly were going to be a good team. I mean you don't get to an All-Ireland final without being a good side, and they showed that today," said McAteer.

"We knew Offaly were going to come at us and battle hard, but at the same time, we had chances that we unfortunately didn't take, but look, that's sport and that's football. These girls are young and they'll learn from it, and really, that's what it's all about."

Despite losing this afternoon, McAteer praised his side and said that the season was all about developing the players. He acknowledged the hard work over the last seven months from the squad saying that the team had a will to win from day one, which is something that can't be taught.

"Sometimes you try your hardest to coach different things into a team, but grit is one thing you can't coach, and these Donegal girls have that," McAteer said. "I mean we've been behind in every knockout game this season, and we've come back strong, so credit to Offaly, but really, I couldn't ask for any more today.
"I said to the girls, that it's tough to lose a final, but I told them it's a learning curve. In reality, we have 39 girls and really, it's all about developing them. They've had top training from top coaches for months now, so they will go back to their clubs as better players and that's a real positive."
