The 2015 clash between Donegal and Tyrone is just one of several matches Joe McQuillan has been the referee for between these two sides
Joe McQuillan will be the man in charge for this Saturday’s All-Ireland group stage Group 3 opener between Donegal and Tyrone.
The Cavan man will take charge in MacCumhaill Park, with throw-in at 7.15pm.
McQuillan is no stranger in taking charge of this North-West rivalry, having been the man in the middle for some of the major championship games between Donegal and Tyrone over the last decade.
The Ulster referee was in charge of Donegal’s Ulster clash with the Red Hand County during the 2011 provincial semi-final, the first round of the 2015 competition, the All-Ireland series in Ballybofey in 2018 which saw Tyrone progress, as well as the 2021 Ulster semi-final.
McQuillian has also been involved in some of Donegal’s most infamous battles in the championship, such as their 2013 hammering to Mayo in 2013 in Croke Park, the north-west side’s one-point win over Armagh in the 2014 All-Ireland quarter-final, as well as the county’s shock victory over Dublin in that year’s semi-final.
He has also been noted for sending off a number of Donegal players in these encounters, with the likes of Eamon McGee receiving his marching orders by McQuillan during Donegal’s 2013 battle with Mayo in Croke Park, as well as Neil Gallagher getting a red card against Tyrone during the opening round of the championship in 2015.
