London secured their first-ever victory over Mayo, with Donegal men playing their part, in the University of Galway Air Dome in the FBD Insurance League quarter-final.

Mayo kicked more than a dozen poor wides as the more incisive guests deservedly made history, winning out 0-12 to 1-8.

Daniel Clarke from Newtowncunningham and formerly of Naomh Colmcille, started for the Exiles, with Letterkenny's Michael Miller, who played for St Eunan's, coming off the bench. Donegal's 2012 All-Ireland winning substitute goalkeeper Michael Boyle coaches the London panel.

Debutant London full-forward Shay Rafter ended the day with six points to his name, while Mayo had Cillian O'Connor leading the attack with Jordan Flynn around the middle and Donnacha McHugh at full-back. Rob Hennelly was in goal and Eoghan McLaughlin at wing-back, but apart from that, the team was very inexperienced.

Mayo had a slender one-point lead at the break, 0-6 to 0-5. London came out in a determined mood after the resumption and kicked the next three points courtesy of Aidan McLoughlin, Gareth McDowell and the impressive Oran Kerr. An O'Connor goal looked to have swung the balance towards Kevin McStay's team. But it was London who finished the stronger and two pointed frees from Gallagher put them back in front. And although Conal Dawson levelled for Mayo, Rafter's last point won the contest for the visitors.
