Goals win matches as St Eunan’s showed in a hard- fought affair against a battling Carndonagh at Foden.
Carndonagh 0-10 St Eunan’s 2-7
And it took a cracking goal from Eunan’s flying wing forward Calvin Aidoo to put real daylight between the sides midway through the second half to give his side the platform for victory.
St Eunan’s opened the scoring from a Gavin Forde free and Paddy Monagle replied with a fine effort for the home side. The home side edged in front from a free from Cathal Doherty and Matthew Porter put Carn into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after nine minutes.
Scores were hard to come by as both defences stood firm, before Sean Halvey pegged one back for Letterkenny and Cian Doherty put Carn into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. But Lady Luck smiled broadly on Eunan’s in the 18th minute when a long speculative shot from centre forward Fergal Delaney somehow ended up in the Carn net. That put the winners in front against the run of play and Cian Doherty and Delaney swapped points as Eunan’s held a slender 1-3 to 0-5 lead.
Eunan’s shook themselves in this half and had an early point from Calvin Aidoo to go two up. But this was quickly cancelled from two frees from Cian Doherty to level matters. Half time sub and county panellist Ryan Hilferty got the first of his two points to make it 1-5 to 0-7.
But Aidoo sprung to life hitting a sumptuous point from the side line and two minutes later he speared through the Carn defence and smashed the sliotar to the net to put Eunan’s into a 2-6 to 0-7 lead. They could only add one more point to their tally as Carn finished strongly in a tight finish. Daragh Tully hit a great point for Carn and Doherty converted another free.
Paddy Monagle made it a two-point game in a dramatic finish and Ryan Hilferty pointed a late free to ease Eunan’s into a nervous victory.
