The 100% Redress Party has been born from the protests that have seen thousands of Donegal people take to the streets over the defective concrete blocks crisis
The 100% Redress Party could run as many as four candidates in Inishowen in June’s local elections.
The party, which was registered with the Electoral Commission last September, announced its first candidate in Inishowen on Sunday.
Ali Farren, who is the manager of the Malin Head Community Centre, is to contest a seat in the Carndonagh electoral area in the elections for Donegal County Council, which are to be held on Friday, June 7.
He is the second candidate to be announced for the party after Tomas Sean Devine was announced last week as a candidate in the Letterkenny electoral area.
Mr Farren, who is the party’s press relations officer, said the party will be making further announcements of candidates in two further electoral areas in the coming days.
The party also hopes to run two candidates in the Buncrana electoral area and could run a second in the Carndonagh area. The party is still on the search for people who would be willing to stand, he said.
With two sitting councillors in the Buncrana electoral area - Fianna Fáil’s Rena Donaghey and Independent Nicholas Crossan - not contesting the election, Mr Farren said the party feels it can take two seats there.
“We do believe there is a vote to be got from defective concrete blocks homeowners that would see two people in south Inishowen elected.
“We feel defective concrete blocks homeowners need a voice, but we need people to stand up. Politics works by people putting themselves forward to be voted for. We are looking for candidates. We have possibilities but we would like to see more people coming forward.”
